Word Love

4/27/2023

I love words so much that I,
habitually,
look up the etymology
of English words I already know.

That is one way to savor
the many, mini meanings
that make up our reality.

So imagine this same obsession
in a second language.

You know how most people
fawn over social media?
That is how I am with
the translator on my phone.
Because I want to know know
what is being said. My desire
for precision is a sign of respect.

But it makes some people think
that I know less than I do.
Like tonight, someone said in Spanish
that I don't understand well.
Yet, I understood that.

If you hold strong word love,
keep doin just that. Hold it.
Nurture and develop it.
'Cause most could agree that
more nourishing sounds are needed.

The question "How are you?" is PROFOUND.

But it has been watered-down to a synonym for "Hello."

Forced or fake auto-responses of obligated okay-ness are expected.

(And if you are going through something tragic, it really doesn't matter! Every social encounter OPENS with this well-established Ritual of Insincerity.)

The question "How are you?" prompts an answer that begins with "I AM _____________."

This means many times each day, you are invited to SPEAK THE MOST POWERFUL STATEMENT that can be spoken of yourself.

And the socially-expected thing to do, is be QUICK + SLICK with your answer.

For a change... TAKE YOUR TIME, and tell your truth.
