Can social media be a spiritual practice?

Of course it can.

Most mundane things can double as spiritual practice. Consider: parenthood; a self-owned business; a recovery; a righteous cause; mindful movement; and, yes, expressions on social media.

If you're not a small business-owner, then you've possibly never associated strategy or method to what you post. That's cool. Or you might be like me... a small business-owner terribly resistant to social media. Well, I'm thinking about social media in new ways:

  • INTENT - Why do you post?
The internet is louder than ever, and much of the noise is manipulative and destructive. I am not here for (just) shits and giggles. I am here -- online -- to be a decisive and committed force for good. It's my aim to create content that helps decrease harm and deceit, and increase love and liberation. This won't always happen, but it will always be my aim.

  • CONTENT - What do you post?
Culture seems to love mimicry and imitation, but that's never been my way. 98% of the things I post is ORIGINAL content. I take time to actually reflect, research, and CREATE something FRESH. I've always preferred to create, rather than curate.

  • CONSISTENCY - How often do you post?
This is the factor that helped me see social media's potential to serve as a spiritual practice. Anything can be done on occasion, but daily practice creates mastery. A chosen daily commitment provides discipline and structure that inspiration-only models can't rival. I'm finding consistency frees creativity.

One of my purposes in life, is to place greater demand on human communication. We're malnourished in sincerity. Withholding of praise and appreciation. Over-developed with criticism and rage. Reluctant with transparency. And I'll be explorin' all up in these tendencies, in coming days. ✨

The question "How are you?" is PROFOUND.

But it has been watered-down to a synonym for "Hello."

Forced or fake auto-responses of obligated okay-ness are expected.

(And if you are going through something tragic, it really doesn't matter! Every social encounter OPENS with this well-established Ritual of Insincerity.)

The question "How are you?" prompts an answer that begins with "I AM _____________."

This means many times each day, you are invited to SPEAK THE MOST POWERFUL STATEMENT that can be spoken of yourself.

And the socially-expected thing to do, is be QUICK + SLICK with your answer.

For a change... TAKE YOUR TIME, and tell your truth.
