Can social media be a spiritual practice?

Of course it can.

Most mundane things can double as a spiritual practice:  parenthood, a self-owned business, a recovery, a righteous cause, gardening, mindful movement, and yes, shared expression on social media. Here are three factors that can help level-up the time you spend on your favorite social platforms:

  • INTENT - Why post/comment?
The internet is louder than ever. And much of the noise is unpleasant, and inaccurate. My intent with each post and comment that I make is to decrease harm and deceit, and increase love and liberation. That doesn't always happen, but it's my unchanging ideal.

  • CONSISTENCY - How often to post/comment?
This is the factor that helped me see social media's potential as a spiritual practice. Anything can be done occasionally, but daily practice deepens mastery. A daily commitment to something provides structure and discipline that inspiration-only models (my previous way) can't touch.

  • TONE - What mood does your post/comment generate?
Posts, like people, have tenor and personality. The same information could be presented in a way that activates a reader toward good action, or manipulates them into frightened overwhelm. I'm always going for the former.

If you're not in business for yourself, then you may have never thought about your social media expression in terms of strategy and method.

One of my ultimate purposes in life, is to place greater demands on our communication with each other. We're malnourished in sincerity. Awkward with praise. Negligent in attribution. And over-developed in rage and criticism.

THERE'S MORE FOR US.

And I'll be explorin' all up in dat, in coming days.
